The unlikely friendship

On the banks of a river stood a berry tree, home to a clever monkey. One day, he met a hungry crocodile resting nearby and offered him sweet berries. The crocodile enjoyed them so much that he returned daily, and soon the two became close friends.

When the crocodile carried some berries home, his wife grew envious. “If the fruit is so sweet, imagine how delicious the monkey’s heart must be,” she said. She insisted that her husband bring the monkey to her as a meal.

Reluctantly, the crocodile invited the monkey to ride on his back across the river. Halfway, he revealed the plan. Shocked but composed, the monkey replied, “Oh, my friend, why didn’t you tell me earlier? I left my heart hanging on the tree!”

The gullible crocodile turned back. As soon as they reached the bank, the monkey leapt onto his tree and laughed, “You may trick others, but wisdom always finds a way.”

The friendship ended, but the story lived on — reminding all that quick wit can outsmart even the most dangerous situations.
