Once upon a time, King Vikramaditya was given a strange duty.
Every night, he had to fetch a spirit named Vetal from a tree in the forest.
But Vetal was no ordinary spirit.
Perched upside down, he loved to tell stories. And each story ended with a question — a riddle about right and wrong.
If Vikram stayed silent, his head would shatter. If he spoke, Vetal would fly back to the tree.
And so, night after night, the chase began again.
Through these endless tales, Vikram’s wisdom was tested. His courage, too.
Until one night, in the final story, Vetal revealed the truth — the sage who sent Vikram meant to betray him.
Forewarned, Vikram defeated the sage and broke free of the cycle.
The burden was lifted. The stories had shaped him, protected him, and left behind their wisdom.
And that is why the tales of Vikram and Vetal are told even today —
to remind us that stories are not just words, but guides that shape who we become.
